He says he loves her anyway
when starlings peck at the
dinner she has prepared for
him. A tree grows through the
kitchen wall. In the attic a heron
fills the old bathtub with water
and stands. She tries to explain,
but the flamingoes are gathering
in the hall again. She doesn’t
know if he understands that the
moon will sing show tunes he will
tire of. Soon, it is as she thought,
he has found another and says he
wants her to meet his new love who
waits in the front yard. She feels he
is heartless. She feels he is cruel.
She feels his gift of a puppy that
he has named Josie – his new love.
And when she cries, he smiles
because he understands.
